What fills your mouth shapes your day. The writer of this psalm made a choice to talk about God's goodness all day long, not because life was easy, but because God had been faithful. That's a decision any of us can make this morning, before anything goes wrong.
Most of us know what it's like to have someone who seems set against us: a critical coworker, a family member who misunderstands us, a person who watches for our mistakes. Our natural response is to rehearse their words, defend ourselves to anyone who will listen, or stew in quiet frustration. But notice what this writer does instead. He fills his mouth with praise.
Here's the freeing part. The psalmist doesn't say his enemies gave up because he out-argued them. They were put to shame because God came through. You don't have to win every battle or prove every point. God can handle your reputation while you handle your worship.
Try this today: every time a complaint rises up, swap it for one sentence about what God has done for you. Tell a friend over coffee. Whisper it while you're stuck in traffic. Gratitude on your lips leaves little room for bitterness in your heart.
Father, teach me to talk about Your goodness more than my troubles. When people oppose me, help me trust You to defend me while I keep praising You. Let my words today bring You honor. Amen.
