Proverbs 17:10

Some people need a hundred painful consequences before they change, but a person of understanding can be changed by one honest word. Think about that. A single conversation, done well, can do more for you than years of hard lessons.

So ask yourself: when someone corrects you, what happens next? Do you get defensive, make excuses, or quietly shut them out? If so, you may be choosing the long, painful road instead of the short one.

Here is a simple practice for today. The next time someone points out a fault, pause before you speak. Say thank you, ask one clarifying question, and then take it to God before deciding what to do with it. That sting you feel is not an attack — it is information.

This also saves you from being the person who learns everything the hard way: the lost job, the strained marriage, the broken friendship. One humble conversation today can spare you a hundred blows tomorrow. Teachability is cheaper than regret.

You do not have to be perfect to grow. You just have to be reachable — willing to let one loving word land where a hundred punishments would have to force their way in.

Father, make me easy to correct. Soften my heart when honest words come, and help me receive them without pride or fear. Teach me quickly, Lord, so I don't have to learn the hard way. Amen.
