What comes out of our mouths starts on the inside. Before a single word leaves our lips, our heart has already weighed in. That means wisdom isn't just about learning to speak better — it's about letting God shape what's in our hearts first.
Think about your day ahead. There will be a moment when you're tempted to react fast — a tense email, a sharp comment from a family member, a driver who cuts you off. In that moment, take one breath and ask yourself: will these words help, or am I just venting? That small pause is your heart instructing your mouth.
This verse also reminds us that wise words teach and build up. A gentle correction lands better than a harsh comeback, and an encouraging word at the right time can change someone's whole week. People may forget what we said, but they never forget how our words made them feel.
Finally, watch what you feed your heart, because that's what your mouth will draw from. If we fill up on complaint, gossip, and scrolling, that's what spills out under pressure. But when we spend time in God's Word, we give our hearts something wise and life-giving to share.
Dear Lord, guard my heart today, because I know my words flow from it. Help me pause before I speak and choose words that bring life instead of harm. In Jesus' name, Amen.
