whose end is destruction, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who think about earthly things.

Philippians 3:19 · Focus
Reflection 1

Paul gives a sober warning here: it is possible to live your whole life with your stomach as your god. That doesn't just mean food. It means anything your appetites demand and you keep feeding — comfort, entertainment, approval, possessions, the next purchase, the next scroll.

Reflection 2

The real question this verse asks is simple: what has your focus? Follow your attention for one ordinary day. Where do your thoughts drift when nothing is demanding them? What do you reach for first thing in the morning? Whatever holds that place is quietly functioning as your god.

Reflection 3

Here is the good news — focus can be retrained. Start small. Begin tomorrow morning with one minute of prayer before your phone. When a craving or worry pulls at you during the day, pause and ask, "What am I really hungry for right now?" Then bring that honest answer to God instead of to the vending machine, the cart, or the feed.

Reflection 4

This isn't about shame; it's about direction. Earthly things aren't evil, but they make poor gods because they never satisfy and they never last. Every time you lift your eyes upward — even for thirty seconds — you are training your heart to remember what actually matters and where your real hope lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I've let my appetites sit on the throne of my heart. Help me notice what I'm truly craving and bring those longings to You instead. Set my mind on things above today, one small choice at a time. Amen.
