As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”
The disciples wanted a timeline. They asked Jesus for dates and signs, hoping to get a heads-up on how everything would unfold. Honestly, we get it — not knowing what's coming makes us uneasy, and we'd love a schedule we could plan around.
But notice how Jesus responds throughout this chapter. He doesn't hand out dates. Instead, He keeps pointing His friends back to the present: stay awake, stay faithful, keep serving. The question they asked was about the future, but the answer He gave was about today.
That's a word for us too. It's easy to lose focus worrying about what's ahead — the economy, our health, our kids, the state of the world — while the assignments God has given us for today sit untouched. Anxiety about tomorrow has a sneaky way of excusing us from obedience right now.
So here's a simple way to live this out: each morning, ask God, "What have You put in front of me today?" Then give your full attention to that. Love the people in your house. Do your work with integrity. Pray instead of panic. Staying ready for the future looks a lot like being faithful in the present.
Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I obsess over tomorrow and miss what You're doing today. Help me stay focused on the people and tasks You've placed right in front of me. Keep my heart ready and my eyes on You. Amen.
