He sat down and called the twelve; and he said to them,“If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
The disciples had been quietly arguing about which of them was the greatest. Notice that Jesus didn't shame them for it—He simply sat them down and turned their whole idea of greatness upside down. In God's kingdom, the way up is down, and the path to honor runs through humble service.
That's a hard word for us today. We live in a world that rewards climbing, competing, and getting noticed. But Jesus calls us to pick up the towel instead of the trophy—to look for the person who needs help and quietly help them.
So what does this look like in real life? It's doing the dishes when it isn't your turn. It's listening to the coworker everyone else avoids, giving credit away instead of grabbing it, or showing up for a friend who can't repay you. These small, hidden choices are exactly where God grows something great in us.
Here's a challenge for this week: each day, do one act of service that no one will ever know about. Don't announce it, and don't post it. Just serve, trusting that your Father who sees in secret is pleased.
Father, forgive me for the times I've chased the spotlight instead of the towel. Give me Your humble heart, and help me find joy in serving the people right in front of me today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
