John 16:22

Jesus spoke these words to friends who were about to watch everything they counted on fall apart. Notice that He didn't pretend their pain wasn't real — He simply called it temporary. That's good news for us too: sorrow may be part of your story right now, but it doesn't get the last word.

Maybe today feels heavy for you. A loss, a diagnosis, a relationship that's struggling, or just a long stretch of gray days. You don't have to fake a smile to be a person of faith. Jesus is honest about our grief, and He offers something better than pretending: a joy deeper than circumstances.

Here's the practical key — where your joy is anchored. If your joy is tied to things going well, any bad day can steal it. But if it's tied to Jesus, to the truth that He is alive and nothing can separate you from Him, it holds steady even when life doesn't.

Try something simple today. When discouragement creeps in, pause and say one true thing about God out loud — that He is with you, that He keeps His promises, that He is coming through for you. Write it on a note where you'll see it. These small reminders train your heart to hold onto the one thing no person, no circumstance, and no hard season can take from you.

Joy like that isn't a mood you have to manufacture. It's a gift you get to receive, again and again, every time you remember who holds you.

Dear Lord, I bring You my sorrows honestly today, and I ask You to anchor my joy in You instead of in my circumstances. Remind me that Your presence is a gift no one can take away, and help me carry that joy into everything I do today. Amen.
