No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.
Jesus didn't call His disciples employees, contractors, or workers on a job site. He called them friends. Think about what that means: friends share things. They talk openly. They don't keep secrets from each other. That's the kind of relationship Jesus wants with you.
It's easy to fall into the habit of treating God like a boss we're trying not to disappoint. We show up, do our tasks, clock in with our prayers, and hope we've done enough. But Jesus is inviting you into something warmer than that. He wants you to know His heart, not just follow His instructions.
So today, talk to God like a friend, not an employee giving a status report. Tell Him what you're actually feeling, the good and the messy. And then do something friends do that workers don't: sit quietly and listen. Ask Him what's on His heart, and give Him space to answer.
This changes how you serve, too. You're not earning your place; you already have it. Serve today from friendship, not fear. When you know you're loved as a friend, your work for God becomes an overflow instead of a performance.
Here's a simple way to live this out: before your next decision, pause and ask, "What does my Friend think about this?" That one question can turn an ordinary Tuesday into a conversation with God.
Dear Lord, thank You for calling me Your friend instead of just a servant. Help me talk to You honestly today and listen for Your heart, not just check off my to-do list. Let everything I do flow from our friendship. Amen.
