Joel 2:13

Back in Joel's day, people would rip their clothes to show they were sorry. But God saw through the torn fabric to the untouched heart underneath. He's not impressed with outward displays of regret that cost us nothing. What He wants is the real thing: a heart that genuinely turns back to Him.

So what does that look like for us today? It means being honest instead of vague. Not just a quick “sorry for everything, God,” but naming the specific thing: the resentment you've been holding, the habit you keep excusing, the words you wish you could take back. Real repentance isn't just feeling bad; it's changing direction.

Here's what makes that possible: we're not running back to a scowling judge. God describes Himself as gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and overflowing with unfailing love. You can be completely honest with Him because He is not waiting to crush you. He is waiting to restore you.

Try this today: find a quiet minute, name one thing honestly before God, and ask Him to help you actually turn from it. Then let His mercy shape how you treat others. If He forgives you that freely and fully, you have everything you need to forgive the person who wronged you.

Father, I bring You my whole heart today, not just an apology. Show me what needs to change, and give me the courage to turn from it for real. Thank You that Your mercy is bigger than my failures. Amen.
