Baruch had a front-row seat to God's work as Jeremiah's scribe, yet his heart was heavy with his own unmet dreams. God's gentle question to him still speaks to us: What are you really chasing? It's worth sitting with, because we can serve God faithfully while quietly building a little kingdom for ourselves.
There's nothing wrong with having goals — God isn't against ambition. But when our plans revolve around recognition, comfort, or making a name for ourselves, they wear us down. Chasing 'great things' often leaves us restless, constantly comparing, and anxious about a future we can't control.
So what does this look like in real life? Hold your plans loosely and pray over them before you pursue them. Do the work in front of you faithfully, even if no one applauds. When a new opportunity comes, ask not just 'Will this make me greater?' but 'Will this honor God and serve people?'
Here's the beautiful part: God promised to spare Baruch's life wherever he went. When we release our grip on greatness, we discover that God Himself is our security and our reward. Faithfulness in ordinary places matters more to Him than impressive things done for our own name.
Father, forgive me for the times my dreams have been all about me. Teach me to seek Your purpose over my own glory and to rest in You as my greatest reward. Amen.
