However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.
James calls this the royal law because it rules over everything else we do as believers. Notice that it doesn't ask us to feel warm and fuzzy about people. It asks us to love them the same way we already love ourselves. And we all know how to do that, because we do it every single day.
Think about it. You feed yourself when you're hungry. You give yourself grace when you mess up. You forgive yourself and try again. Now imagine turning that same steady care toward the people around you: the coworker who gets on your nerves, the family member who tests your patience, the neighbor you barely know.
Love like this is practical, not poetic. It looks like actually listening when someone talks instead of waiting for your turn. It looks like a meal dropped off, a text sent, a need noticed and met before anyone asks. Most of the time, loving your neighbor is just paying attention.
So here's your challenge today: pick one person. Not someone easy, but someone God brings to mind. Then do one small, deliberate thing that shows them the same care you'd naturally give yourself. That simple act is obedience to the highest law there is.
Dear Lord, You've loved me with patience and grace, even when I didn't deserve it. Help me love others that same way today, starting with the one person You've placed on my heart. Make my love practical, real, and generous. Amen.
