But the pelican and the porcupine will possess it. The owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.
This is one of those passages we'd rather skim past. It describes a place under God's judgment so empty that only wild birds and animals can live there. It's a sobering picture of what happens when people shut God out completely—everything He built them to be slowly unravels into wasteland.
But look closely at the imagery. God talks about a measuring line and a plumb line, the tools of a builder. Every life gets measured by something. And when we build on things that aren't solid—money, approval, our own plans—the measurement that comes back is confusion and emptiness.
So here's a practical question for today: what plumb line are you holding your life against? Is it God's Word, or is it comparison, busyness, or what everyone else thinks? Take one honest look at your schedule, your spending, your priorities this week, and ask whether they line up with what God says matters.
The good news is that the God who measures is also the God who rebuilds. If He shows you a crooked wall in your life, that's not rejection—it's an invitation to let Him straighten it. Start small: bring one area to Him today and say, 'This part is Yours. Build it right.'
Father, I don't want to build a life that ends up empty. Hold Your Word up against my heart like a plumb line, and show me what needs to change. Rebuild the crooked places in me, and make my life something that stands firm for You. Amen.
