Genesis 41:16

Picture the scene: Joseph, a former prisoner, is standing in front of the most powerful man in the world. Pharaoh has a problem nobody can solve, and everyone is watching to see what Joseph will say. He could have grabbed the spotlight. Instead, he pointed straight past himself to God.

We get those moments too. Someone praises your work, your kids turn out well, or you handle a crisis that impressed everybody. It feels good to be seen, and there is nothing wrong with that. But there is a quiet test hiding in every compliment: will we keep the credit, or will we pass it along?

Humility is not about putting yourself down or pretending you have no gifts. It is simply being honest about where your ability came from in the first place. Saying "God helped me do this" does not shrink you. It places you in the truth, and the truth is where real confidence lives.

Try it this week in two ways. First, when someone compliments you, add a simple redirect: thank them, then mention God's help out loud. Second, when you hit something that is clearly beyond you, say so to God before you fake your way through it. That honest little phrase, "this isn't in me, so I'm trusting You," opens the door for God to work, and it takes a mountain of pressure off your shoulders.

Dear Lord, thank You for every gift, skill, and open door You have placed in my life. Keep me humble when I am praised and honest when I am in over my head. Let my success point people to You, not to me. Amen.
