Exodus 20:3

This command wasn't given because God is insecure or needy. It was given because He knows how easily our hearts drift. Whatever gets our first attention, our first money, and our first trust in a crisis—that thing has become our functional god, even if we never say it out loud.

For most of us today, that's not a carved statue. It's our career, our savings account, other people's approval, or the constant comfort of our phones. Here's a simple test: what do you reach for first when you're stressed, bored, or afraid? Whatever answers that question is competing for the place only God should hold.

So how do we live this out? Start small and start first. Give God the opening minutes of your day before the news and notifications. Bring your biggest decisions to Him before consulting your own preferences or everyone else's opinions. Let Him have the first word, not the leftovers.

And when you notice something quietly edging God out of first place, don't spiral into guilt. That awareness is actually an invitation—an invitation to return. God isn't waiting to scold you; He's waiting to restore you, because first place in your life is where He can bless you most fully.

Father, show me anything I've put ahead of You, and give me the courage to move it back where it belongs. Be first in my day, my decisions, and my heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
