This verse sets a high bar: not love your wife when she's easy to love, but love her the way Christ loved us—completely, sacrificially, without waiting for a reason. That kind of love doesn't keep score. It gives first, even when nothing comes back right away.
Sacrificial love shows up in ordinary moments. It might mean turning off the game when she needs to talk, giving up a Saturday for something that matters to her, or letting go of your need to win an argument. Each small surrender says, "You matter more than my comfort."
Practical love also pays attention. Notice what she's carrying this week—stress with the kids, a long day at work, worries she hasn't said out loud—and take one thing off her plate. Ask her what makes her feel loved, then actually do it. Listening may be the most loving thing you do all day.
And on the hard days, when feelings run low, remember that Christ loved us at our worst. Love is a decision you make again every morning, not just a warm feeling. Ask God for the strength, and He will supply it.
None of us can love like this on our own—and that's the point. This kind of love comes from walking closely with Jesus, the One who first loved us all the way to the cross.
Dear Lord, teach me to love like You love—patiently, sacrificially, and without conditions. Help me put my wife first in small, real ways today, especially when it costs me something. Fill me with Your love so I have something to give. Amen.
