Before knowing Christ, we were on the outside looking in—no hope to hold onto and no God to turn to. Paul doesn't remind us of this to shame us, but to help us see how far grace has carried us. Sometimes the best way to appreciate where you are is to remember where you were.
This truth changes how we face hard days. When your finances fall apart, when a diagnosis comes, when a relationship breaks, you are not left to figure it out alone. Hope is not wishful thinking for you—it's a person, and He lives in you.
So today, catch yourself when discouragement starts talking. When you hear 'nothing will ever change,' answer it with what you know: you are near to God now, and His promises are yours. Write down one situation where you need hope, and hand it to Him specifically in prayer.
Then look around. Someone in your family, your workplace, or your neighborhood is living exactly how this verse describes—hopeless and far from God. You were once far off too, so reach out with a kind word, an invitation, or an honest story of what God has done for you.
Gratitude and generosity are how we live this verse out. Thank God daily for the hope you've been given, and look for one chance this week to pass it on.
Dear Lord, thank You for bringing me near when I was far away and for giving me hope that nothing in this world can take away. Help me hold that hope firmly in my hard moments and share it boldly with someone who still feels hopeless. Amen.
