It is surprisingly easy to look holy. Skipping meals, following strict rules, pushing ourselves hard in the name of faith — these things can feel impressive, even to us. But looking spiritual and actually growing spiritually are not the same thing.

These things indeed appear like wisdom in self-imposed worship, humility, and severity to the body, but aren’t of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.
Willpower has never been strong enough to defeat sin on its own. You can deny yourself a hundred things and still wrestle with the same old temptation tomorrow morning. External discipline, by itself, does not reach the heart where real change has to happen.
True humility is not measured by how much you can give up. It is measured by how honest you are willing to be — honest enough to admit you cannot fix yourself, and humble enough to lean on Christ for the strength you lack. That admission is where real freedom begins.
So today, check your motives. Ask yourself whether your spiritual habits are drawing you closer to Jesus, or quietly becoming a way to earn approval from others or even from yourself. Choose honest prayer over performance and real dependence over rigid routines, and let God's grace do what your willpower never could.
Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I have settled for looking holy instead of walking closely with You. Teach me the humble honesty of depending on Your grace every single day. Thank You that real change comes from You, not from my own strength. Amen.
