If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
Saying we love God is easy. He never argues with us, never gets on our nerves, and never disappoints us the way people do. But John points out something uncomfortable: the real test of our love for God isn't what we say to Him on Sunday. It's how we treat the people we bump into every day.
Think about the person who came to mind the moment you read this. Maybe it's a family member you're still hurt by, a coworker who gets under your skin, or a neighbor you've been avoiding. That person is exactly where your love for God is being tested right now.
Loving them doesn't mean you have to feel warm fuzzies. It means taking a real step today: forgive the debt instead of rehearsing the offense, speak a kind word instead of a sharp one, show up when it would be easier to stay home. Love in the Bible is mostly something you do, not something you feel.
And when your heart just won't cooperate, be honest with God about it. Ask Him to help you see that person the way He sees them, because He loves them just as much as He loves you.
The beautiful news is that God doesn't leave us to work this up on our own. His love poured into us is the very fuel we need to love people who are hard to love.
Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I've claimed to love You while holding bitterness toward someone You love. Give me Your love today for the person I've been struggling with. Make my love for You real in the way I treat people. Amen.
