Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
We live in a noisy world. Sermons, podcasts, social media posts, well-meaning advice from friends—so many voices claim to speak for God. But not everything that sounds spiritual actually is. John's counsel is simple: don't check your discernment at the door.
So how do you test what you hear? Start with Scripture. Before you accept a teaching, a trend, or even a comforting quote, hold it up against God's Word. If a message makes you feel good but contradicts the Bible, be careful—feelings can be manipulated, but truth cannot.
Pay attention to fruit, too. Does what you're hearing make you love God and people more, or does it just build up the person speaking? Truth points to Jesus; error usually points somewhere else—to hype, to money, to a personality, or to your own pride.
Discernment isn't cynicism, and it isn't a license to judge everyone around you. It's humble wisdom that says, 'I love God's truth too much to swallow a lie.' Ask Him to sharpen that sense in you every single day, and stay close to His Word, because the better you know the real thing, the faster you'll spot a fake.
Father, thank You for giving me Your Word as an anchor in a world full of voices. Give me a discerning heart that tests everything against Your truth, and the courage to walk away from anything that isn't from You. Keep me grounded in Your Word and close to Your Spirit. Amen.
