Let no one deceive himself. If anyone thinks that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
It's surprisingly easy to fool ourselves. We can mistake experience for wisdom, or confidence for truth, and once we think we've got it all figured out, we stop listening—to God, and to the people around us. That's exactly the trap Paul is warning about here.
Notice how upside-down his advice sounds: to become truly wise, you have to be willing to become a fool. In God's kingdom, wisdom starts with humility—with honestly admitting, 'I don't know everything, and I need help.' The world applauds people who always look like they have the answers. God draws near to people brave enough to say they don't.
So what does this look like on an ordinary Tuesday? It means praying before a big decision instead of only running the numbers. It means letting someone correct you without getting defensive. It means opening your Bible expecting God to challenge you, not just confirm what you already believe.
Try one small thing this week: pick an area where you've been leaning on your own understanding—money, work, parenting, a strained relationship—and ask God for His wisdom instead. Then stay quiet long enough to actually listen. You might feel a little foolish for a moment, but you'll be building on something that lasts.
Father, forgive me for the times I've trusted my own cleverness more than Your truth. Give me the humility to be teachable, even when it costs me my pride. Make me wise in Your eyes, not just the world's. Amen.
